Botanical Illustration is the art of depicting the form, color, and details of plant species. Studying nature’s forms and colors is a great way to learn about drawing and color to make beautiful realistic color in drawings. Traditionally a technique that was done in watercolor, Wendy Hollender has developed a method of teaching using a combination of colored pencil and watercolor pencils. Colored pencil isn’t just a medium to use, it is also a learning tool. It allows you to teach drawing skills and teach about color at the same time. Understanding form and structure is crucial to this technique.

Students will learn how to use a grisaille technique for undertones in a neutral color and then how to layer color on top to create depth, using watercolor pencils in combination with dry colored pencils. This technique is very immediate and materials are simple, allowing the artist to work easily in multiple locations and it is especially useful for work in the field.

Botanical Drawing starts with an understanding of using a single light source toning technique. Students will become familiar with this basic technique and practice on simple forms. Once an understanding of using this light source combined with toning form in a gradual consistent rendering, color layering will be introduced.

Drawing at actual scale, students will be introduced to basic perspective and measuring to create precise drawings of flowers. Color matching and blending will show students how to create natures subtle color variations. These techniques are relaxing and meditative and give students an opportunity to be intimate with nature and see close up the beauty, complexity and repetition of nature’s structures and patterns. Students will draw spring flowers,  combining watercolor pencils and colored pencils. All levels from beginner to advanced is fine as everyone works at their own level with plenty of guidance from Wendy.

3-Day Immersion: Plant Exploration Through Botanical Drawing
In this workshop we will learn basic practices used by botanical illustrators to create realistic descriptive drawings of plants in all stages of growth. These techniques first produce a descriptive structural drawing of a plant, then add color with colored pencil or watercolor pencil. We will draw plants in a few important plant families, focusing on understanding the similarities within a plant family. Botanists often describe plant families with drawings rather than with paragraphs of detailed scientific language.  For visual people, getting to know plant families with drawings is fun and empowering.

Main Conference Workshop: Using a Grisaille Technique to Create Three-Dimensional Form
Learn how to use a grisaille technique for undertones in a neutral color and then how to layer color on top to create depth with colored pencils. This technique is very immediate and materials are simple, allowing the artist to work easily in multiple locations. It is especially useful for work in the field and we will practice on simple forms such as fruits or seed pods. These techniques are outlined in the instructor’s book, “Botanical Drawing in Color: A Basic Guide to Mastering Realistic Form and Naturalistic Color.”

Main Conference Workshop: Exploring Flowers: Drawing a Study Page
Working with real flowers, we will learn how to take apart a flower to understand its structure. Then, using basic techniques of perspective in botanical drawing, participants will draw a flower with an understanding of structure and 3-D quality of flowers. Participants will also draw reproductive parts of the flower, possibly add leaves and stems, and add basic color with colored pencils.

Illustrating Hidden Treasures: Botanical Art by Wendy Hollender

Exhibition Opening at The Ashokan Center in Olivebridge, NY.

For the past seventeen years, artist Wendy Hollender's work has focused exclusively on plants. Her interest in understanding how plants function informs the botanically correct illustrations she creates. This exhibition presents drawings featured in magazines, advertisements and a book about wild edible plants titled Foraging and Feasting: A Field Guide and Wild Food Cookbook, co-published by Hollender and author Dina Falconi. Wendy Hollender will be on hand to answer questions.

People who attend the opening are invited to stay for the Cajun & Square Dance Party & BBQ at 6 p.m. The menu will feature a number of root-based recipes inspired by the exhibition.

Illustrating Hidden Treasures was first presented at the United States Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C. Botanist, Susan Pell, Science and Public Programs Manager at USBG, curated the exhibition. It will remain on view at The Ashokan Center through Fall 2016.

We begin by drawing simple forms like fruits and nuts and move on to more complex forms, including flowers, fall leaves, pine cones, and other natural materials.

Using watercolor pencils and dry colored pencils we learn a grisaille technique to make undertones in a neutral color and how to layer other colors on top to create depth. These tools and techniques produce an immediate result and are portable so you can easily draw anywhere in nature.

Artists at all levels of experience are welcome—everyone works at their own pace and receives guidance from Hollender.
