The Mouse in the Rutabaga

This group of paintings was inspired by the vegetables grown at Hollengold Farm where I have lived for the past five years. The idea for this series started when my son harvested some rutabagas. One rutabaga had been carved out by a small animal. I imagined a small mouse had made itself a home in the rutabaga. I started on these drawings, wondering what it would be like to be a small mouse discovering the magic of the vegetables growing, just as I had. My daughter grew artichokes, and it was a real treat to see the flower develop, on the one artichoke that did bloom. I thought the little mouse must have liked seeing it too…And that it enjoyed discovering how the different vegetables grow and taste!
